M362 - New Testament Preaching

Joe is a 1970 graduate of Oregon Bible College. In addition to his teaching duties Joe also serves as Academic Dean. He served as pastor of churches in Front Royal, VA and Glendale, CA. He joined the ABC staff in 1991. He has graduate degrees from Arizona State University and Fuller Theological Seminary.  Joe received his Doctor of Ministry degree (D.Min) from Columbia Theological Seminary.
 

M362 New Testament Preaching- 3 hrs.   This is a basic course in homiletics/preaching that primarily involves preaching at least 3 sermons, hence the term, laboratory experience.   It attempts to give the individual the biblical basis for preaching based on New Testament terminology... Kerusso, I cry out, proclaim,  preach; Euangelizo, I preach the good news, etc.   The primary objective is to practice preaching in a practical way, but also to study two basic books on preaching.



TERMINAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  1. Practice Preaching and Telling Word Pictures/Stories

  2. Prepare a minimum of three sermons, maybe more depending on circumstances

  3. Be evaluated by peers and the professor

  4. Learn basics of Homiletics/Preaching from Mitchell's book and Evans's book  

  5. Attend 2 different services with attention to the message.  Someone other than what you are familiar with.

12 DVDs which include Lecture and Student sermons.  Send in one page notes per hour of DVD lecture WEEKLY.   Some classes include student preaching.   Based on the "Hook, Book, Look, Took" basic format, a short 70-100 word summary of how each student preacher did.  EMAIL ADDRESS:  jmartin@abc-coggc.org  120
2 Phone Reviews with a "7 minute story" told to the professor @ 20 points. The STUDENT calls in. 40
Mid-Term 70
3 Sermons (the MAJOR portion of class)  Videos sent in on DVD or VCR format, or make other arrangements.  If in the area, present the sermon to the professor!   If presented to a church, have someone video the message 300
Two Outside Sermons, Listen to someone outside your denomination, send in a one page summary.   1/2 page of what was preached.   1/2 page of how they moved you.   Choose different styles  if you're mainstream, go to high liturgical (Catholic, Jewish, Lutheran, etc)  and low liturgical (Charismatic, Pentecostal, Black church, etc.)  Go to hear someone different!   Each at 40 points....         80

MID-TERM :

They will be multiple choice, some short answer essay. If done verbally, time will be allowed in the conversations with the professor.  Testing will be done for distance learners to fit each situation. These may be done by email or other methods.
